After the implementation of its new policy in January, which demands that digital lenders in the East African nation of Kenya provide proof of license, Google has removed hundreds of lending apps from the Play Store in Kenya.
The move, according to TechCrunch, came after Kenya’s Digital Credit Providers legislation went into effect last year and required companies that offered loans digitally to obtain licenses from the nation’s top bank, the Central Bank of Kenya.
As Google declined to answer, it was unclear how many lending apps had been blacklisted at the time. Nevertheless, a quick check by TechCrunch revealed that roughly 500 applications, including MoKash and Okash, that had previously been in the finance category on Play Store had been removed.
