Following weeks of intense pressure, the German government has finally succumbed to pressure as they assent to the delivery of the German-made Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine, to help in the fight against Russia.
Berlin released that, they would provide Kyiv with one company of Leopard 2 A6 tanks, or 14 vehicles while its allies who have procured the German battle tanks can deliver their own to help in the conflict.
In an address to the German parliament, Chancellor Olaf Scholz discloses their decision which resulted from a wide consultation with their western allies.
The German Chancellor said, they were not compelled to make the decision but rather it was based on the agreement within their allies, which most importantly the United States to also commit their tanks to the cause.
The head of the German military federal academy for security policy, Ekkehard Brose said including the US in the agreement is necessary for others to avoid Europe facing Russia alone in a nuclear battle.
Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy appreciated the decision of the Berlin government, saying the German main battle tanks will help in broadening their defense against Russia.
Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergey Nechayev condemned the decision of Germany, describing it as an extremely dangerous move.
He said the deployment of tanks to Ukraine will bring the conflict to a new level of confrontation.
