Let’s talk about the future, civilization is on the verge of extinction; “In 100 years, the Earth will cease to exist.”
We would need to represent our planet and species, not our specific island, in order to project a decent image on the planetary stage.
But how do we do that when climate change is intensifying every year, conflicts are ripping cities, putting millions of people in grave danger, and previously unknown diseases are threatening the lives of every individual on the planet?
This is where Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, sees humanity’s biggest issue. Musk feels it will be too late by the time we realize we need to pool our resources and unite.
“I wonder how many dead ‘one planet’ civilizations there are out there in the cosmos? Species that never made it to another planet and ultimately extinguished themselves or were destroyed by external factors. Probably a few.”
Elon Musk
What steps are we taking to address these challenges as they become more prevalent?
World leaders are instilling developmental hope in the world’s population despite their complete lack of knowledge of what they are saying. “By 2060, we’ll have reached net-zero… Bla!”
Before humans grasp the need for a united world, we’re most likely to make initial contact with an alien species, or we may already get wiped out of the earth’s surface by a deadly disease.
This will eventually lead to an existential crisis. This is why.
Civilization Is On The Verge of Extinction
The scariest thing I ever heard about the cosmos was in a Joe Rogan podcast with Neil Degrasse Tyson. Tyson explained that there are these things called “rogue planets,” which are planets that are trapped between gravitational fields of multiple suns.
Because two or more suns are pulling on a planet they eventually throw it out into the cosmos and these planets then become rogue, freezing-cold rocks traveling amongst the stars.
What do we do?
We stay on Earth until an apocalyptic event, either internal or external, wipes us all out. That could be a billion years from now. Maybe it’ll happen tomorrow. Who’s to say?
Asteroids are notoriously difficult to detect, as NASA has revealed. In fact, only one day before traveling between Earth and the Moon in 2019, an asteroid the size of a football field named ‘2019 OK’ was discovered. It utterly caught researchers off guard.
Escapism!
Elon Musk has suggested that we evolve into a multi-planetary species to reduce our chances of extinction. If Earth were ever struck by a meteor or subjected to a nuclear attack, a civilization on Mars could assist in its recovery.
With all of the troubles on Earth, I understand why people could be frustrated by space travel and problems that sound like they came straight out of a Star Trek episode.
Building a “backup” plan is especially important now that phrases like “WW3” and “nuclear war” are being bandied about in the mainstream media.
It may appear that becoming a multi-planetary species is a waste of time right now, but it will pay dividends in the long run.
