Daughter’s Birth Triggers Fatal Violence in Bahawalnagar
In a heart-wrenching incident in Bahawalnagar, Punjab, Pakistan. A woman named Shumaila Bibi was brutally tortured to death by her husband and in-laws after giving birth to a daughter. The violence occurred in Khadam Abad Colony, where Shumaila, originally from Kot Radha Kishan, had been married to Nauman. Despite being a mother of two sons and four daughters, Shumaila faced relentless abuse from her husband and in-laws, who blamed her for not providing dowry and for having daughters instead of sons.
Police Action and Similar Case Highlight Gender Bias
Following a complaint from Shumaila’s brother, local police registered a case and arrested her husband. The victim’s body has been sent to the District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. In a similar tragic case from Rahim Yar Khan, a man named Fayyaz Ahmed divorced his wife, Amna Bibi, after she gave birth to five daughters. Left unsupported, Amna had to set up a Biryani stall to provide for her daughters, highlighting the deep-rooted gender bias and societal pressure faced by women in the region.
