Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election, was briefly detained upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday morning. Sowore’s flight from Washington D.C. landed around 9:43 AM local time.
He reported that upon reaching immigration, his passport was seized and he was informed of orders for his detention, which he attributed to a broader crackdown on dissent by the current government.
However, Sowore was released shortly after his arrest, with his passport returned to him. He took to social media to express his views on the situation, describing it as part of the government’s fear of upcoming protests planned for October.
Sowore urged citizens to engage in planned direct actions against what he termed tyranny in Nigeria.
