Nigerian popular social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has once again found himself in legal trouble. The Nigerian Police Force apprehended him on the orders of the Police Commissioner of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Igwe.
According to activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju, VeryDarkMan’s arrest stems from his alleged exposure of a Nigerian individual who reportedly duped someone abroad. The controversial influencer faces accusations of defamation, raising questions about the boundaries of online expression and accountability.
Adeyanju commented on the situation, saying, “Our client, @thatverydarkman, has just been arrested by the police on the instruction of CP Igwe for exposing someone who allegedly duped a Nigerian abroad. Instead of the police arresting the person alleged to have committed the fraud, they arrested VDM on allegations of defamation.”
This incident adds to the ongoing debate surrounding social media influencers’ responsibilities and the legal consequences they may face for their actions. VeryDarkMan has recently been engaged in heated arguments with several prominent individuals, including Obi Cubana, Blord, and Iyabo Ojo. The arrest came less than 42 hours after he called out Nigerian comedian Ashmusy for allegedly defrauding a fellow Nigerian of 1 million naira.
