Polygon, a leading Ethereum Layer-2 network, has successfully regained control of its Discord channel following a recent phishing attack. The breach, which occurred as excitement builds around Polygon’s upcoming MATIC to POL token migration, involved attackers exploiting the platform by posting phishing links disguised as fake POL airdrops.
The attack is believed to have been facilitated through a compromised bot or integration within the Discord server. Several users reported significant losses due to the phishing scam, with one individual claiming to have lost 120,000 MATIC tokens and 30 ETH.
Mudit Gupta, Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer, confirmed that the security team worked swiftly to reverse changes made by the hacker and secure the channel. Gupta urged users to remain vigilant and avoid clicking on suspicious links.
Despite the security breach, MATIC has shown resilience in the market, trading above $0.50 at the time of writing. This positive trend could pave the way for MATIC to retest the $0.55 level.
Users are advised to exercise caution when interacting with any links or announcements related to the MATIC to POL migration, especially on unofficial channels. Verifying the legitimacy of the source and ensuring the authenticity of any information is crucial to avoid falling victim to similar attacks.
Polygon has emphasized the importance of keeping software up to date and employing robust security measures to provide additional layers of protection against such threats. Users are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the project’s security team
The incident comes just ahead of Polygon’s planned token migration from MATIC to POL, which is scheduled to begin on September 4. Despite the breach, Polygon reassured its community that the migration process will proceed as planned, with enhanced security measures in place to protect users.
