Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his congratulations to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on securing a third term, marking Islamabad’s initial response to the election outcome in the neighboring country.
The prime minister shared the news on his Twitter account, previously called X. He congratulated @narendramodi on becoming Prime Minister of India, one day after Modi’s inauguration and almost a week after the election results were announced on June 4.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in for a third term on Sunday, coming after election results that were not as good as anticipated, forcing him to rely on coalition partners for governance.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power for the last decade, did not manage to secure the same overwhelming victories it had in the past two elections, contrary to analysts’ predictions and exit polls.
India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed neighbors, have fought two wars and multiple clashes, mainly over control of the Kashmir region in the Himalayas.
Since India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir state in 2019 and divided it into two federally administered territories, relations between the two countries have remained strained and unchanging.
