Severe flooding in Myanmar has resulted in nearly 300 deaths and extensive damage, sparking urgent calls for international assistance.
The flooding was triggered by heavy rains brought on by Typhoon Yagi, which has also caused destruction across Southeast Asia and parts of China. According to DVB TV, approximately 300 people have died since the remnants of the typhoon hit Myanmar on September 9, mainly due to floods and landslides.
In central Myanmar’s Yamethin township, 200 bodies were recovered after a devastating landslide destroyed 350 homes. “The full extent of the damage is still unclear as we continue to compile lists,” a local resident assisting with the relief efforts shared with DVB TV. “Most casualties resulted from floods and landslides,” added another resident from Hopong Township in southern Shan State.
State-run media reports confirmed that five dams, four pagodas, and over 65,000 homes were destroyed by the floods. More than 200,000 people have been directly affected by the disaster.
Both the military junta and opposition groups in exile have issued urgent appeals for international aid to cope with the ongoing crisis.
