Detention During Umrah Hajj
Saudi security forces have arrested an Iraqi university professor in the holy city of Mecca as he paid homage to assassinated Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh while performing the Umrah Hajj rituals. Online activists reported the arrest of Salman Dawood al-Sabawi in the kingdom via X, formerly called Twitter.
Social Media Uproar Over Arrest
Their posts featured pictures of Sabawi holding a banner at the courtyard of the Masjid al-Haram – Islam’s holiest site, reading “I dedicate his Umrah Hajj to martyred Ismail Haniyeh” in Arabic. Many social media users took to X, Facebook, and other social media platforms as soon as the news about the detention of Sabawi – a resident of the southern Iraqi city of Mosul – broke.
Calls for Immediate Release
Social media users are demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Sabawi, expressing outrage over his detention and questioning the actions of Saudi authorities.
