Hunter Biden, the 54-year-old son of President Joe Biden, was found guilty on Tuesday of federal gun charges. This marks the first time in history that the child of a sitting US president has faced such criminal prosecution.
Hunter Biden faced accusations of lying about his illegal drug use while purchasing a handgun in 2018, a felony offense.
The verdict coincides with his father’s reelection campaign and on a day when the president is slated to address gun violence in a speech.
Donald Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee in November, was convicted of business fraud charges less than two weeks ago. The jury deliberated for about three hours over two days before reaching a guilty verdict.
During the one-week trial held in Wilmington, Delaware, Hunter Biden opted not to testify. While First Lady Jill Biden attended several days of the trial, President Biden did not, although he stated that both he and Jill were “proud” of their son.
