On Saturday, an Islamist supporter beheaded a school history teacher in the street in the suburbs of Paris in the broad light of day after depicting cartoons of prophet Muhammad.
A teacher of history in France in middle school was knifed to death near the school where at the beginning of this month the French officials said that he showed his pupils the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, who had been regarded as blasphemous by Muslims.
In an incident that has led to the immediate condemnation of both Muslims and Cristian leaders globally.
Most public figures interpreted Friday’s killing as an assault on the core of France’s statehood, with its ideals of secularism, freedom of religion and freedom of speech, by targeting a teacher.
The attack happened at the street in the suburb of Conflans Sainte-Honorine, in front of the high school where the victim worked. This is a medium-sized district with many inhabitants commuting to Paris to work.
However, the French police questioned nine persons in detention, police sources said.
The perpetrator was shot dead on Friday by police, minutes after 47-year-old Samuel Paty, a professor of history was murdered by him.
“One of our fellow citizens was assassinated today because he was teaching, he was teaching pupils about freedom of expression,” French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters at the scene of the attack.
“Our compatriot was flagrantly attacked, was the victim of an Islamist terrorist attack,” Macron said. “They won’t win… We will act. Firmly, And quickly. You can count on my determination.”
Investigators tried to decide whether he behaved on his own or had accomplices. French media confirmed he was a Chechen-born 18-year-old.
Earlier this month, Paty showed a number of Muslim parents in the civic class about the free speech in which his students wrote cartoons of Prophet Muhammad.
Muslims claim that the prophet is blasphemous in any depiction.
The attack bore the marks of Islamic terrorism, Prime Minister Jean Castex said, promising to react to his government. “I want to share with you my total indignation. Secularism, the backbone the French Republic, was targetted in this vile act,” Castex said.
In an immediate post-assault time in the mid-class suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, four relatives of the perpetrator, including a minor, have been detained according to police reports.
Five more were detained overnight and two pupil parents were hired by the professor at College du Bois d’Aulne.
A week earlier, a man who said that his daughter was in Paty’s class posted a social media video in which he called the Teacher a thug and appealed to others to “join forces and say ‘stop, don’t touch our children’”.
Whether the parent in police custody was one of them was not clear. If the perpetrator saw the video was also not immediately understood.
Pupils parents placed flowers closed to the schools gates in honor of the deceased. And some people said their kids were already distracted arising from the incident.
“(My daughter) is in pieces, terrorised by the violence of such an act. How will I explain to her the unthinkable?” one father wrote on Twitter.
A police source said the attacker was shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ or ‘God is the Greatest’.
