Senior political correspondent Maggie Haberman indicated on Friday that former President Trump appears anxious following two assassination threats during this election cycle. Her remarks came after Trump, at a recent rally, mentioned being “ready to start duking it out” and jokingly referred to having a “yip” problem after being startled by movement in the audience.
Attending the rally, Haberman noted that Trump seemed “on edge,” describing his behavior during the event. “You could see his eyes darting and his body jerking as he expressed concern that someone might approach the stage,” she explained on CNN’s “The Source.” She emphasized that his admission of a “yip problem” suggests anxiety, a notable shift for someone who typically projects strength.
The tension follows the arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, in connection with an apparent assassination attempt at Trump’s Florida golf club. Secret Service agents observed Routh with a rifle near the perimeter, prompting them to fire shots in his direction. Routh has since been charged with two federal gun offenses.
This incident follows another alarming event in July when Trump was grazed by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania, where a gunman killed two individuals and injured others. The Secret Service’s handling of that situation faced intense scrutiny, leading to the resignation of former Director Kimberly Cheatle after an internal review revealed significant operational failures.
In response to ongoing threats, the House recently passed legislation aimed at increasing security for Trump. A corresponding bill in the Senate would extend protections for presidential candidates and their families.
Haberman noted that Trump’s campaign feels constantly “under siege,” facing multiple threats, including physical and online dangers. She highlighted the recent incidents in Pennsylvania and Florida, although there is currently no evidence linking them to broader organized efforts.
Some Republicans have attributed these threats to incendiary rhetoric from Democrats, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, who praised the recent security legislation while asserting that Trump remains “unshakeable” despite the threats.
