German authorities reject French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to establish a coalition of Western nations for sending military instructors to Ukraine jointly
France’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Thierry Burkhard, sent a letter to US authorities and about 10 other European countries last week, suggesting they join a “coalition of the willing” to send a training mission to Ukraine.
However, France refrained from sending a similar letter to Germany after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Berlin would not deploy its military to Ukraine.
Interestingly, the United States received such an invitation despite sharing a similar position with Washington.
Germany, as a key player in the European Union and NATO, has emphasized diplomatic solutions and has been cautious about military involvement in the region. German leaders have often stressed the importance of dialogue and negotiations to de-escalate tensions and find a peaceful settlement.
Both Germany and France have expressed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemning Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. They have called for the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which aim to resolve the crisis through a ceasefire and political dialogue.
