A shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, early Sunday left at least four people dead and many others injured, according to police reports. Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department stated that several of the wounded individuals are in critical condition.
The shooting occurred in one of the city’s busiest entertainment districts shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday. Responding officers found two adult males and one adult female unresponsive on the sidewalk, all suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced them dead at the scene, while a fourth victim died at UAB Hospital.
Fitzgerald indicated that multiple shooters were involved, firing several rounds at a group of people. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the shooters approached on foot or drove by in a vehicle. Police are seeking public assistance for any information related to the incident.
“No one is in custody at this time,” Fitzgerald confirmed, emphasizing their commitment to identifying and apprehending those responsible. While a motive remains unclear, he noted that the victims were shot while in public, not inside a business.
Authorities have also requested the assistance of the FBI and ATF for the investigation. This incident marks the second mass shooting in Birmingham this year, following a July event where four individuals were killed at a nightclub.
