Wang Yi, the director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs and a key member of the Communist Party of China, met with Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s Secretary of the Security Council, on September 10, 2024, in St. Petersburg as both leaders agreed to enhance strategic communication and deepen the strategic dimensions of China-Russia relations.
Wang emphasized the stable growth of bilateral relations, driven by the close guidance of both nations’ leaders, despite global challenges. Marking 75 years of diplomatic ties, he highlighted the strengthened political and social foundations of China and Russia’s comprehensive strategic partnership.
Wang confirmed China’s commitment to advancing strategic communication with Russia through key consultation mechanisms and BRICS cooperation. China supports Russia’s role as BRICS chair and seeks to amplify BRICS’ global influence, particularly among emerging economies.
Shoigu commended the high-level cooperation between the two nations and expressed gratitude for China’s support during Russia’s BRICS chairmanship. Both sides emphasized the importance of true multilateralism and Russia’s backing of China’s leadership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine crisis, with Russia welcoming China’s efforts toward peace and China’s vow to promote balanced international discourse, aiming for a political resolution to the conflict.
