On Monday, a Russian attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv struck a residential area, injuring at least 13 people, according to local officials. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that four guided bombs targeted garages near residential buildings.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov added that a private house and a sports facility were also damaged in the attack.
Among the injured, a 60-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man are in critical condition, Syniehubov stated in televised remarks.
While the number of attacks on Kharkiv and its surrounding region had decreased following Ukraine’s major incursion into Russia’s western region of Kursk on August 6, the city has faced a renewed barrage of Russian strikes in recent days.
Last Friday, a strike on a residential building in Kharkiv killed seven people and wounded 97 others. Then, on Sunday, Russian missiles targeted a shopping mall and events complex, injuring at least 50 people. The recent escalation in attacks underscores the ongoing volatility and danger facing civilians in Ukraine’s second-largest city.
