Former NATO general, Petr Pavel has been declared the winner of the Czech Republic presidential election after amassing 58 percent of the total vote.
Petr Pavel defeated former prime minister and billionaire populist, Andrej Babis who got the remaining 42 percent of the vote.
Mr. Pavel dubbed pro-Ukraine has been at the head, championing closer ties with Kyiv to the detriment of his opponent, Andrej Babis who insists on not sending troops to protect the country from Russia’s attack.
Babis campaign backfired after going against the principle of NATO of sending arms to other member nations, saying he won’t deploy troops to any Baltic states should they be attacked.
Mr. Patel supported the deployment of arms to Ukraine, saying the country should be given the same privilege to join the European bloc.
After declaring the result, Mr. Babis accepted the outcome in his statement where he disclosed that “I would like to wish him to be the president of all citizens of the Czech Republic, to be sensitive to their problems and fight for the interests of the Czech Republic.”
Petr Pavel will take his seat as president of the country in March, as a social liberal.
