The Doomsday Clock, a symbol created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to indicate the proximity of humanity to a potential global catastrophe, has moved closer to midnight than ever before.
On Tuesday, the clock was set to 90 seconds to midnight, 10 seconds closer than it had been for the past three years.
This change reflects the increased threat of nuclear war, disease, and climate change due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The clock has been translated from English into Ukrainian and Russian for the first time, to draw relevant attention to the issue.
The clock was created in 1947 by a group of atomic scientists including Albert Einstein, who worked on the Manhattan Project during WWII.
