Kimbal Musk is a restaurateur, chef, and entrepreneur born in South Africa. The two Musks, both from South Africa, have a firm background in the field of technology.
In 1995 they co-founded Zip2, a newsroom company that helped to create online city guides. In 1999, they sold Compaq for 300 million dollars.
Elon Musk used that money to found PayPal an online payment system that still exists to date and was later sold to eBay fueling the funds used in starting Tesla, SolarCity, and SpaceX.
Kimbal Musk took advantage of his payout to give up his cooking affection. He moved to New York and started to learn French cooking at the International Culinary Center.

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when he volunteered to feed firefights retrieving bodies from the ruins of the World Trade Centre. That was the moment his ideology on food started to take shape.
Elon Musk’s younger brother has a traditional entrepreneurial spirit, but with a family of restaurants and a non-profit organization offering ‘learning gardens’ to schools in the United States.
He founded The Kitchen Restaurant Company in Colorado, Chicago, Cleveland, Memphis, and Indianapolis.
He is co-founder and chairman of Big Green, co-founder, and chairman of Square Roots, a Brooklyn, N.Y., urban farming company, and he is currently on the boards of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX.
Kimbal Musk moved to Colorado and created The Kitchen, an ambitious family of restaurants dedicated to bringing sustainably produced, locally sourced, healthily prepared food to the American heartland, while his brother Elon established a tech empire in California.
“The Kitchen’s mission is to strengthen communities by bringing local, real food to everyone,” Musk, 48, wrote in a Medium post published Tuesday.
“Our goal [with Square Roots] is to enable a whole new generation of real food entrepreneurs, ready to build thriving, responsible businesses. The opportunities in front of them will be endless.” he wrote.
In reality, the kitchen refers to three associated model restaurants. There is a cocktail lounge with food cooked in the wood oven, as well as artisan drinks, The Restaurant, the flagship organization neighborhood bistro, and the Restaurant Upstairs.
The Kitchen Next Door, which serves stuff like burgers, salads, sandwiches, seafood, and beer, rounds off the list.
From Boulder and Denver in Colorado to Chicago, his empire of eateries whose fare includes homemade kale chips, quinoa grown in Colorado, and lamb sourced from Boulder’s Crego Livestock farm.

In 2016 Musk announced the launch of Square Roots founded under the umbrella of The Kitchen LLC, a company that will invest in startups that grow fresh fruit and vegetables.
It aims to provide mentorship and support to urban bootstrapped growers, who will operate from specially built shipping containers fitted with hydroponic growing towers from Square Roots.
The younger Musk is on Chipotle’s board, whose fresh ingredients prompted McDonald’s to reconsider the grub it sells.
Kimbal Musk envisages a channel of its companies in major US cities, particularly in the South and Midwest, where the conventional dietary markets are the most dominant in industrial agriculture and fast-food chains.
The Kitchen has been sticking its toes in these depths ever since. In more than 50 towns and cities, the non-profit arm of the organization, The Kitchen Group, runs about 300 “learning gardens,” where an estimated 200,000 schoolchildren tend crops and, hopefully, forge deeper links with their food.
Particularly skeptics who discuss the environmental advantages of urban farms and the ability to produce ample calories to feed whole cities accept that they imbue people with greater food appreciation.
Kimbal Musk told The Huffington Post in an interview back in 2016 upon unveiling what fosters his vision, “We want our communities to know what real food is. We want kids in communities to know real food, and we want them to have a choice between real food and industrial food,”.

He added “Right now, for many of them, it’s industrial food, fast food or nothing. We want to bring education back so kids know they have options.”
The Kitchen Group is funded by a combination of foundations and individual donors in the states in which gardens are placed.
Today in schools across Colorado, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Memphis, The Kitchen Community has more than 225 learning gardens.
“People wanted the electric car for at least two decades, then Tesla came along and showed them how it’s done,” Kimbal Musk said. “The Kitchen is doing that for real food.”
