Bezos surpasses Musk on Forbes list of the world's richest individuals

Forbes’ annual ranking of the world’s billionaires features a record-breaking 2,755 individuals, with Inc (AMZN.O) founder Jeff Bezos leading the list for the fourth year in a row, according to the publishing house.

After a year in which the coronavirus pandemic upended global markets and endangered the livelihoods of people all over the world, the ranks of the ultra-wealthy are rising.

According to Forbes, this year’s billionaires are worth a record of $13.1 trillion, up from $8 trillion last year.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla (TSLA.O), rose from 31st place last year to second place this year.

As for who is leading between Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, there are divergent evaluations. Bloomberg names Musk the world’s richest person, while Forbes names Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world.

Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH (LVMH.PA), Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft (MSFT.O), and Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook (FB.O), fill out the top five wealthiest billionaires on the planet.

For the first time in over two decades, investor and corporate tycoon Warren Buffett dropped out of the top five, as tech executives dominated the Forbes rankings.

There are 493 newcomers to this year’s list, including Whitney Wolfe Herd, CEO of dating app Bumble (BMBL.O), which went public this year.
