Bitcoin hits record $28,600 as 2020 rally powers on

On Wednesday, Bitcoin reached a historic $28,599.99, bringing returns past 295 percent this year despite increased demand from larger investors.

The most famous cryptocurrency in the world was last up 3.7% at $28,375. It has soared by almost half since hitting $20,000 on Dec. 16 for the first time.

In particular, Bitcoin has recently seen interest from broader U.S. investors drawn by its perceived inflation-hedging features and the potential for fast gains, as well as hopes that it will become a common payment mechanism.
