The US Memphis police chief has ordered the immediate dissolution of the unit that engaged in the brutal beating of Tyre Nichols.
The police chief on Saturday dissolved the Scorpion unit after its officers engaged in activities that are tagged as a cloud of dishonor.
The decision to disband the unit was achieved following a series of interactions with the victim’s relatives, community leaders, and uninvolved officers.
Police Director Cerelyn Davis in a statement said, “It is in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the Scorpion unit.”
The decision to dissolve the unit by the police chief is perceived as a welcome idea to the general population.
Commending the decision, the Nichols family lawyer described the move as a decent and just decision, which will be paramount in ensuring justice.
Protesters who took over the street showing their grievances against the recurring killings of blacks in the country also welcomed the idea by cheering for the decision.
The officers engaged in the activities have been fired and charged with murder and other crimes in Nichols’s death.
