Honduras, one of Taiwan’s few recognized friends, is in danger of falling out of favor as it strives to establish diplomatic ties with China.
The shift, according to Honduran President Xiomara Castro, aims to increase international engagements.
Honduras was immediately warned by Taiwan not to fall into China’s “trap”.
Since it believes Taiwan to be a part of its territory, China has long tried to isolate it and forbids its allies from maintaining contact with the island.
Only 13 governments would recognize Taiwan if Honduras decided to side with China.
Additionally, it will strengthen Beijing’s position in an area where Washington has traditionally supported its rival.
