A Chinese real estate magnate with a New York office has been accused by US authorities of planning a billion-dollar swindle.
The charges against Guo Wengui and Kin Ming Je, one of his business associates, include wire fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering.
Mr. Guo is a supporter of former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon and a critic of the Chinese government.
Mr. Guo claimed in an online post that he spent over an hour being questioned while being shackled.
According to authorities, Mr. Je is still at large and resides in London.
Miles Guo, Miles Kwok, and “Brother Seven” are just a few of Mr. Guo’s aliases. Ho Wan Kwok is mentioned in the indictment that was released on Wednesday. He requested political asylum in the United States in 2017 on the grounds of alleged persecution by Communist Party officials.
