Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is seeking to challenge an Indian court ruling that found it non-compliant with government orders to remove certain content.

X argues that upholding this ruling could give New Delhi more power to block content and expand censorship.

The company had previously sought to overturn government orders to remove content from its platform in July 2022, but the court rejected the request in June 2023 and imposed a fine of 5 million rupees ($60,560).

Now, X has filed an appeal, contending that the government’s ability to censor future content without clear parameters must be limited.

The original lawsuit predated Elon Musk’s ownership of X, and he is currently involved in several business ventures in India, including an investment proposal to set up an electric vehicle factory and market entry for SpaceX, his satellite broadband firm.

In the past, Indian authorities have asked X to act on content related to topics such as an independent Sikh state, protests by farmers, and criticism of the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
