US President Joe Biden has branded changes to gender laws and treatment in Florida as “near to immoral” and claimed Republicans’ efforts to restrict transgender rights are “cruel”.
He suggested that federal legislation be implemented to prevent states from restricting trans rights in an interview with The Daily Show.
That comes at a time when there are more anti-trans measures being discussed in US states with Republican governors.
New legislation, according to supporters, are required to help parents and protect youngsters.
“As my mother would say, what’s happening in Florida is almost immoral. What they are doing is just bad “In a footage made available before the show’s Monday broadcast, Mr. Biden stated.
“It’s not like a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I want to become a man or I want to become a woman or I want to change’.
“I mean, what are they thinking about here? They are human beings. They love. They have feelings. They have inclinations that are… it just to me, is, I don’t know is, it’s cruel.”
Mr. Biden was vague about the Florida policies he opposes, but the state has recently adopted a variety of measures to thwart gender affirming child care.
