The Ugandan government has inferred it will not renew the mandate of the United Nations human rights office in the country, citing the development of its sufficient capacity to monitor rights compliance.ย
This was contained in a letter by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on February 3, the ministry remarked on the progress Uganda had made in developing a domestic capacity to monitor rights as the main reason for its decision.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declares that given the strong government commitment and effort to the promotion and protection of human rights, the prevailing peace throughout the country, strong national human rights institutions, and a vibrant civil society it is never necessary to renew the mandate beyond the currentย setting.
