Eight polio samples have been found in Burundi, according to the World Health Organization.
The first epidemic in the nation in more than 30 years was officially declared as a result of the detection.
This was revealed in a statement released on Friday by Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa.
Many people with the disease do not get extremely ill, but others may go on to develop acute flaccid paralysis. The disease is spread through contaminated water and food, or by contact with an infected individual.
While only Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Mozambique still harbor the wild-type virus, recent outbreaks caused by vaccines have been more widespread in Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yemen, the UK, and the United States.
