Desmond Elliot, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has denounced the attack on Olumide Oworu’s labor party opponent’s campaign staff.
Oworu claimed in a tweet on Thursday that thugs broke into his campaign event on Tuesday in Iponri, Surulere.
He wrote, “On Tuesday, as my team and I sought to campaign in Iponri, Surulere, we were ambushed. Although one of my teammates got hurt, we are grateful that the situation didn’t get worse than it already was. The incident has been reported to the police department in Iponri.
“I am not deterred by the incident. Instead, I am more committed to seeing this through. We will pass through the wards in constituency 1 (Akinhanmi/Cole, Adeniran/Ogunsanya, Iponri Housing Estate/Eric Moore, Igbaja/Stadium, Shitta/Ogunlana Drive, Yaba/Ojuelegba). See you outside!”
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state’s police public relations officer, confirmed the attack on Tuesday but said, “I can confirm it but I don’t have all the specifics yet.”
The candidate for the All Progressives Congress and current Surulere Constituency Representative described Oworu’s attackers as “overzealous political jobbers posing as party fans” in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Friday.
