The Federal Government declared on Thursday that Nigeria shall not serve as a dumping ground for air conditioners and refrigerators with energy efficiency ratios below the minimum acceptable energy performance requirement worldwide.
This occurred at a time when the UN said that Nigerians buy one million air conditioners annually.
The Federal Government stressed that the import of subpar cooling devices constituted a threat to the climatic conditions across the nation and ordered the Nigeria Customs Service, Standard Organization of Nigeria, and other pertinent authorities to be aware of their responsibilities.
Around a million air conditioners are sold annually in Nigeria, according to the United Nations Environment Programme, which also noted that this is severely impacting Nigerians’ ability to pay their energy bills.
